The people behind de wine and their story:
Winemaker is Nadejda Diulgerska, representative of the 'new wave' Bulgarian oenology. In 2013 she was awarded ‘oenologist of the year’ by the ‘Winemaking Guild of Bulgaria’. Nadejda is regularly present in wine juries of international tasting panels, such as Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. She has accepted the challenge to continue the tradition of Karabunar winery in a modern way. The result ? Tasteful wines you can hardly forget.
The region and the vineyards:
Karabunar Winery is a young boutique cellar (2007), about 80 km away from the capital Sofia in the western part of the Thracian Lowland at an altitude of 250 meters and with an annual total temperature of over 4000⁰С. The region has some of the best soils and clime characteristics in Bulgaria for the growth of excellent grapes. Over 80% of the arable land in the region is planted with vines.
18 ha of own vineyards in a perimeter of approximately 2 km around the winery, are planted with the indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties Dimyat and Red Misket as well as Mavrud. Besides that, the company owns another 20 ha vineyard in North Bulgaria in the Danube Plain region, near the town of Veliko Turnovo. There are growing the international varieties Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.All this enables the wine cellar, through a diverse and interesting mix of different grape varieties, the rich soils and the micro-climate conditions, to produce highly estimated red and white wines under the following brands: . Bulgarian Heritage, Castellum and Contour.Talking about high-quality we mean carefully handpicked and selected grapes and an individual approach to each bottle of wine as well. All wines age in 225-liter French and Bulgarian oak barrels, type barrique, between 9 and 24 months, depending on the specificity of the wine making process, the grape variety and the aim to achieve maximum harmony of aromas and flavour.
