Syrah was first planted in Bulgaria in Sakar and gradually became one of the new stars of the region. Almost any winery around Harmanli and Lyubimets is working with the variety. Bratanov's first varietal Syrah was from the 2011 vintage - the year when Daniel Bratanov's daughter Elitsa was born. So the name came out naturally.
2016 vintage is one of the most balanced years of the past decade, especially favourable for Syrah. As a result, in the red varieties Bratanov has achieved a good balance between fruit ripeness and acidity preservation. This was the first vintage they fermented ALL their wines spontaneously with the natural microflora from the vineyards – so called “wild fermentation”. The grapes are hand-picked in cassettes with excellent performance - optimal sugars, acids and grape ripeness. After fermentation the wine is aged in Bulgarian, French & Hungarian barrels of 500 l, 400 l and 228 l. Certain proportions of these barrels are used for the blend, not all of them. The final blend is made one month before bottling. Aging in oak barrels: 30 months and a additional of almost 5 years in bottle before releasing it on the market!
Our tasting notes:
A dense ruby color with graphite shades. A complex and spicy aroma of mocha, dark chocolate, black fruit and roasted nuts. The body is complex and structured, with a balance between mature silky tannins and elegance. It reveals a rich palette of sweet spices, leather, mixed with notes of black cherry and ink. A long and memorable musky-spicy finish.
We strongly recommend decanting for at least 30 minutes before consumption!
Best with:
red meats, stewed beef tongue, game, terrines, mature cheeses, dark chocolate desserts.
