Vladislav Vankov Georgi Vankov
Odessos Winery is a new wine project of the brothers Georgi Vankov and Vladislav Vankov. It is the natural continuation of their effort to develop the local wine culture and the specific and unique Northern Black Sea region.
Their philosophy is based on two main principles – to create the best wine from the varieties reflecting the character and the climate of the Black Sea coast area and to achieve balance and elegance in the taste and the flavours.
The story begins in 2016. Traveling around the world and gaining experience in some of the most prestigious wineries in Australia, New Zealand and Chile, the brothers Georgi Vankov and Vladislav Vankov came up with the idea of creating one of the first urban wineries in Bulgaria.
The endless hours of work in different wineries around the world help them to gain experience and realize that the most valuable quality of a wine is the terroir. This clarified the motto and philosophy behind Odessos Winery - to pursue and present their own interpretation of the Northern Black Sea region, working with precisely selected vineyards around the seaside city.
The first official vintage of the winery is 2020…
The concept behind the label – “Kintsugi”
The concept of Odessos wine labels is reminiscent of the Japanese art of Kintsugi - multi-coloured pieces connected by golden lines.
Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese technique for restoring broken pottery and literally means "joining with gold".
The colourful and seemingly random pieces that make up the concept of Odessos wine labels are not random at all. They are related to the brother’s life experiences, their travels and their personality. They tell a whole story, in which the individual parts are welded with the gold of the highest goal - to do what you love.
Northern Black Sea region
The region is strongly influenced by the proximity of the Black Sea. The climate is extremely favourable for the development of viticulture and is suitable for growing white grape varieties.
Climate and soils
The Black Sea coast is characterized by relatively warm summers and mild winters. Average annual temperature amplitudes are relatively low, which provides a prerequisite for the smooth development of the vines. Average annual rainfall is the lowest in the country. Local winds – the breezes affect the climate of the region by blowing cool air from the sea to the land during the day, and in the opposite direction at night. The soils are mainly chernozem, limestone, and gray forest. Topography from 0 – 150 m above sea level; Sunlight Exposure 2080 – 2250 hours; Rainfall 450 mm
